Multiple positions available on MarineGEO mapping project.
The Smithsonian’s MarineGEO program and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) are seeking diverse, early career scientists and students to participate in a network mapping project. We have multiple openings for 6-month paid internships and one opening for an 12-24 month post-doc or post-doc equivalent (i.e., MSc with practical experience). The person in the more senior (longer-term) position will lead the team of interns in a project designed to generate standardized habitat and land-use maps for all the sites across the international MarineGEO network, and to use these maps to answer research questions generated in collaboration with the MarineGEO community. These could address changes in habitat distributions, coastal squeeze, northward migration, or other questions that are generated from meetings with network stakeholders. The ideal candidates have some previous experience working with spatial data (Google Earth Engine a plus) and would be available to start between June and September, 2023. This work could be performed remotely, from STRI in Panama, or from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Maryland. The position is open to candidates regardless of their citizenship, but some preference will be given to candidates with a connection to the Sites and Institutions within the network. For more information contact Rachel Collin ([email protected]) or Steve Canty ([email protected]).
To apply, please send your (1) CV,(2) a cover letter describing your experience and interest in working with spatial data and MarineGEO, and (3) a letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your work to the following email address: mail to [email protected] by March 25, 2023.
